17 December: The 7th anniversary of UNDROP
The 17 December 2025 marks the 7th anniversary of the adoption of UNDROP!
We publish here below the statement issued by the UN Working Group of Experts on UNDROP on this occasion, which reflects on the ongoing relevance and urgency of the UNDROP. On this anniversary, the indispensable contributions of peasants, small-scale fishers, pastoralists, herders, Indigenous Peoples, and other rural workers to global food security and sovereignty, resilient ecosystems and biodiversity, must be reaffirmed. Emphasizing that these communities produce a significant share of the world’s food and maintain traditional knowledge systems critical to climate adaptation, the statement highlights how UNDROP recognizes the rural rights-holders as central agents in sustainable development.
In this anniversary, we call on States, international organizations, social movements, civil society organizations, committed scholars and other relevant actors to accelerate the implementation of UNDROP’s rights-based framework as a foundation for dignity, equality and justice for rural populations worldwide.
