Defending Peasants’ Rights – Newsletter n°6

New category on the website:
The UN Working Group on UNDROP

In September, Defending Peasants’ Rights added a new category: the UN Working Group on UNDROP

The creation of the Working Group is a major step forward for the implementation of UNDROP at all levels. It’s important to make it accessible to everyone, by putting together the Working Group’s publications and explaining how the Group works and how to collaborate with the experts.

You can now find: the Working Group’s first report to the Human Rights Council, an explanatory fact sheet, a video presentation by the Working Group’s Chair, a webinar dedicated to the Group and much more.

We will continue to update this category with all the Group’s news and more practical content!

Fisheries and the right to food in the context of climate change

Report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to food

At the 55th session of the Human Rights Council in March 2024, the Special Rapporteur on the right to food, Michael Fakhri, presented his annual report. This year, he highlights the challenges facing small-scale fishers in the context of the climate crisis. He calls on States to take urgent action to protect the rights of small-scale fisherers, fishworkers and indigenous peoples, while preserving the biodiversity of aquatic ecosystems, in the face of a dominant system that promotes large-scale industrial fishing.

This report has been summarized in an article written for Defending Peasants’ Rights. The article also highlights how the Special Rapporteur uses the UNDROP and put it forwards as an essential tool for fishers’ rights.

FAO’s work on the themes of the UNDROP

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has compiled in one document all of its publications related to 6 of the themes of the UNDROP: family farming; youth and gender equality; the right to a decent income and livelihood; the right to land and other natural resources; the right to seeds and biodiversity; and the right to adequate food.

The document demonstrates the strong link between UNDROP and FAO’s work and it’s commitment to peasants’ rights.

How to implement the UNDROP at the European and national level to promote peasants’ rights

New publication by European Coordination Via Campesina

On September 16, the European Coordination Via Campesina (ECVC) published a report on the implementation of UNDROP in Europe. This new publication presents the Declaration: its origin, purpose, content and how it should be implemented. It lists policy recommendations for international and regional organizations, European decision-makers and national and local authorities.
